Zefizan, stands for Zef and Zan, a cartoon couple created by the Belgian artist Marleen Pauwels.
The idea emerged in 2000 after seeing a photo in a local newspaper. The cut-out of Jef and Jeanne, a delightful couple celebrating their diamond anniversary, wouldn't let her go. She pinned it to the edge of her drawing board and started sketching.
These two perky, plump characters would become the antithesis of the elongated, fragile figures in the monumental works to which the artist devotes her large canvases.
Her husband, the artist Kris Heyse, created them a matching pet, which he named El tapir despistado or the confused tapir.
Zef, a shy, somewhat clumsy little man and Zan, a gracious daredevil, are crazy about each other and life in general.
Oblivious to their appearance and our 'must be perfect' society, they move in their own imaginative world; venturing into everything, having fun and above all, taking time to unwind.
“Actually”, says the artist, “I am quite jealous of them, of their freedom... But above all I am happy and surprised, happy that they make me happy!”
